“Artificial Sight”
Prof Hsin Kang CHANG
Nov 25 (Wednesday) 14.00 –
16.50
Human vision is mediated by one of the most highly developed sensory systems
found in nature. The most common causes of adult visual impairment are
age-related macula degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and diabetic retinopathy.
Thus the deterioration of vision is a major sign of the ageing process. In
recent years, electrical stimulation of the retina has been shown to produce
visual percepts in blind patients suffering from macular degeneration and
retinitis pigmentosa. However, early attempts at retinal implants provide only
limited benefits. More recently a design of a microelectronic retinal prosthetic
system with a stimulating pixel density corresponding to an acceptable level of
vision has been tested with satisfactory results. The concept behind such
“stimulated vision” and its limitations as well as the major issues in the
design and testing of the retinal prostheses will be presented.
